Jordan Phillips -- Mechanic #088, Proclamation of God

Alright, so the idea behind this mechanic is that while playing this "game", the game itself is God in the sense that it gives the player one new rule to follow per level, and that each rule "persists" as an unwritten law for the rest of the game. However, the catch is that sometimes some of the rules will not be true.

For example, let's say in level one that the player is told that touching red walls is dangerous. Thus, the player will want to follow the rule throughout the level, because death is permanent in this game (which means no continues or check marks, you go back the the start!) In the second level, that rule still applies, but it isn't explicitly stated to the player. A new rule will be stated for level 2, e.g. don't let yellow light touch you.

And then, just when you think that it's a strange game of Simon Says, sometimes the rules aren't true. But the only way you can find out is if you choose to defy the rules, which means LOTS of trial and error. This could lead to lots of frustration on the player's part, because they'll be starting from the beginning many, many times.

The social commentary that is quite clear here, is that some people will just choose to listen to "god" and follow the rules, safely reaching the end of the game. Some people will choose to defy the rules in hopes of reaping greater rewards such as treasure or a powerful item. Many times, though, falling into a forbidden pit will likely result in death. But you'll never know unless you try.

The creator's idea is that in the end, two groups of people would be arguing over how to play the game. Be a rebel, or be a follower? This is clearly based off of the quarreling between religious groups and atheists, or the idea that following a set of unwritten rules and ideas keeps a person from exploring new and greater possibilities. If a "moral of the story" could be applied through an interactive program, this would be it. Not so much a game, but a new-age Aesop's Fable. Without anthropomorphic characters.

Lance: Game Mechanic #22: Mini Crawl

The gameplay mechanic known as Mini Crawl on Squidi's website (http://www.squidi.net/three/entry.php?1d=22) is one of the most unique types of games I have seen in recent memory. Instead of having a full-scale epic adventure that would hog system resources, it's just a simple banner ad. It's really meant to link to the squidi site, but it's also a litter diversion for the player.

One of the best parts is that it features an inventory system and player stats as well as giving the feeling that it's more of an old-school NES RPG. The combat system I also like in that it's fairly straightforward and not complicated by four million commands that seem to plague several of todays RPGs. Navigation is also quite simple as it's on a side scrolling 2D plane. it also has a bit of a 3D element.in that players can go through doors in the backgrounds to access new areas of the game. I honestly would love to see this game developed as I would almost always be playing this when surfing the web.

Mechanic #011 Time Shock Tactics

The name of this title quickly caught my attention I was thinking of final fantasy tactics and the it looks kind of similar to it. There's three different types of groups and they branch out into 5 different types of characters that vary in movements and attacks. The game has some very basic things with the attacks and defense stuff. It has a simple equation for attacks but it doesn't show hit points only full power or no power. I would definitely play this game because I love these kind of concepts for any game that I play.

Review of mechanic 106: Composition Army

link

This game was described as "Comp-Grid battles meet Tetris." In this game, 2 players compete using units that approach the front line in a tetris-block-like formation. Overall, I liked the idea of it, but I would have liked to know how time passes in game, as it only mentions that it takes 5 seconds for wounded units to be removed from battle. Some of the advanced rules such as column bonuses and fusion seem like they add a layer of complexity for more advanced players. One more thing that I liked about this game is that it could be easily paper-prototyped, by representing seconds by turns. Overall, it could be a great game if handled right.

MECHANIC NUMBER 93!!! by the wizard... Mr. Boura

The brains at "squidi" came up with a very interesting idea of a collectibles Zelda type game. I didn't read over the "player cards" or "town cards", but I was quite intrigued with the idea of the "dungeon cards". Cards represent a possibility within the collectible game. The more cards you have, the more variety there is. Procedurally generated, everything from player appearance to dungeon layout is based off of your "deck".

The concept is actually really cool. The idea that EVERY TIME you play this game, the dungeons could be completely different, the towns are completely different, and the players will be completely different is awesome. The creators did seem turned off by the idea of creating tons and tons of content that, because of statistics, might never be used, however, if they made the game customizable, people could create their own "cards" and see them implemented in the game.

The dungeon cards vary in a few aspects. There are "seed" cards that define a specific algorithm or formula used to generate the dungeon. There are floor plan cards, that define the basic shape the dungeon will resemble when the rooms are placed. There are theme cards, such as fire, earth, water, etc. And then puzzle and room cards, puzzles being obviously different puzzles, and room cards being random rooms with baddies and maybe a rock or river.

The dungeon generation will reflect the cards already picked. If the theme "fire" is picked, then mostly "fire" monsters will be used. If the dungeon used a specific puzzle once, it wont use it again in that dungeon.

The creators also showed a little hesitation with tool based rooms, IE, you have to have the hook shot to get past this one room. The idea would work easily, because they lay out the dungeon in a "tree" and it would be easy to check if the hook shot rooms are AFTER the room in which you get the tool, but they felt it would get too confusing and overwhelm them. I disagree. I think that would be essential to create interesting dungeons or else it will get redundant even with the random generation of rooms. Think of the possibilities, creating rooms in which you have to have BOTH the hook shot and the lamp, BUT you can only get one tool per dungeon. The order of dungeons can be random, so the variety is nearly endless.

I love this idea. I think its amazing and would love to see it happen if not help make it happen. I know that the process would be amazingly hard, but I think this would be amazing especially in 3d rather than a 2d Zelda game.

Phil Hodo Mechanic #64- Deduction Tactics Review

I choose this tactic because it gives a lot of challenges. The mechanic disguises enemy units and you must figure out what the unit is to kill it efficiently. You must fully understand the abilities and powers in the game to play it well. The game mechanic offers great challenges because of the versatility of choices in the enemy units and game play. It also takes patience to study the opposition to discover a possible advantage or weakness. Since I'm analytical, I would enjoy playing it for the challenge and replay value.

Lionell Fisher Gravity Squidi

This is actually a very fun mechanic. this is a 2d multi player game in which all player characters have a different point of gravity. for example, the blue team's gravity is along the left wall, and the red team's gravity is along the roof. its like a fun dead space gravity mechanic that anyone can enjoy.

Also, it seams like it's turn based, I don't really like the turn base factor. I would like to just fight it out with 16 player battle.

Trevor Lift Mechanic #021 - Pellet Quest Review

Pellet Quest RPG is a game based on PacMan. It is really no different than PacMan, but instead of just eating all of the pellets to go on to the next level, the player must get a key to advance. Two aspects that makes this different is the enemy AI and the various traps around the levels. As far as the enemy AI, there would be enemies that will stand still. Once they see you, they will charge at you.

In the article, the writer says that "the pellets are both experience points and money. You can spend pellets to buy keys, items, and abilities from shops." It later says that certain areas require X number of pellets to enter. This is why I do not think that this mechanic has been thought out very well. We need pellets to buy stuff and also need them to open different areas. So if I were to spend a thousand pellets, how do i get more so i can open that area up assuming that the pellets do not regenerate?

The base mechanic itself is a good start and is what made PacMan the game that it is. Some of the ideas in the article seem to be flawed and not very clear to me at least. This mechanic seems geared toward the casual gamer audience. If the enemies AI were to be more challenging, I would see more hardcore gamers wanting to play this.

Mechanic 107 card flip Dungens review by Todd Ivey Sr.

this game looks like it will be fun to play, until you read the rules for playing the game. This is a two player game one player plays the dungeon side. The other player plays the heroes. The rules say the dungeon player creates a dungeon out of cards.

How the dungeon will be built is undecided. The hero player starts off with a group of
adventures in the dungeon entrance card.

This is a game I do not want to play because it involves cards cards are the meat of this game with some math. I like math. The problem with this game is you have to spend some time learning the rules on how to play this game and figure out how to build a dungeon. People will not want play the game.

Planet Visiting Space-Themed Game

How about a space themed game where the player can visit different mini planets with a vehicle? Visit different cities and alien cultures, battle enemies, find treasure... a cool little adventure game. Burning through each planet's atmosphere on the way down would be a pretty fun element.

I don't know if it would be too complex to program something like that... we would have to set up a gravity system, obviously. Lots of physics involved, though we wouldn't have to get into really advanced things like quantum mechanics... that would be ridiculous.

Any thoughts on this?

SPRING BOARDS!!!!

Really stinky garbage has to be delivered to the dump before the smells kills everyone.

Food comes to life and fights back against the people that are devouring them.

Player has to pee but cant find the bathroom. Player must search a building and find the bathroom before they pee themselves.

Player wakes up in a strange bedroom, naked, and has to figure out what happened last night, and get his clothes back in the process.

Player wakes up hungry, and his fridge is empty. Player must find food before he passes out.

Player is a slacker/couch potato, and books are attacking him in an attempt to make him smarter. Player must fight off intelligence.

As always with strengths come weaknesses:
-Character Modeling
-Level design
-Character drawing
-Documentation
-Storyboarding

I think I have touched an a good chunk of my skills here. Feel free to comment if you are confused on anything I have posted here.

Phil Hodo - Strengths and Weaknesses

My strengths are..

Level Design, storyboarding, flowcharts, story writing,
documentation, task management.

My weaknesses are...
Programming, modeling, texture and lighting.

Lance - Strength's and Weaknesses

I feel that I have a couple of strengths to bring to the team.

3D Object modeling
level design
some programming (mainly Actionscript 3.0)
texturing
documentation

I also do have a few weaknesses that other members of the team may have to pick the ball up on. However that doesn't mean I'm not willing to learn and improve.

Programming (several languages)
audio
character modeling & animation
drawing (concept art, character art, etc.)

This list is by no means complete. As I said though, I'm more than willing to improve the skills that need improvement.
Team email address is teaminsidevoice.blogspot.com
my strenght is textures, level design and programming.
we are brainstorming ideas for our game call god. The player plays god he can create people.
Giving them different eye color, skin color etc.
We are still coming up with more things the people can do.

Jordan Phillips - Strengths/Weaknesses

Here's what I consider to be my strengths:

Technical -- Art/drawing, music, textures, level design, writing
Practical -- Open minded, flexible with ideas, well-rounded in terms of abilities

Weaknesses:

Technical -- High-end programming, average modeling experience (not terrible models, but my proficiency and speed are not high)
Practical -- Not a good multi-tasker. I also tend to focus too much on detail before blocking things out first. I have full intentions on improving my workflow skills.

ADDITIONAL details:

I do have my own recording equipment for any sound and music needs. Not anything extravagant or expensive, but the bare essentials for Voice work, sound effects, and music mixing, as well as the creativity to go with it. I have a Dynamic Samsung Q7 microphone, not cheap, not expensive. But it gets the job done with good quality. I also have a Line 6 interface for MIDI keyboards, guitars, bass, and mics.

I also do have experience with C++ programming. I am certainly no expert, but if for some reason we need to use C or C++ at any point, I can help out with that. And I enjoy writing in C, at least when I see things work : ]

Jacob Boura ~ Weakness' and Strengths

My strengths are...

Organizing and directing team meetings/brainstorming.
Character development and Modeling/Texturing.
Basic object oriented programming.

My weakness' are...

Complex programming.
Lighting.
Level design.
Documentation.

I'm sure there are some more to add to each list; however, I cant think of them at the moment. If I do I'll edit the list.

Feel free to put your own interpretations of my skills down here. I'd appreciate the feedback.
